A little bit about me...
My name is Michelle Nagai and I'm the proud mama of a beautiful boy named Uta Francis, born at home on June 17, 2006. My husband and I are both composers and artists, and we all live in Brooklyn, NY, along with two cats: Juniper (a.k.a. Jooni Cat) and Mikeh. We're happy to be a work-play-live-eat-school-at-home-family and we look forward to the adventures that lie ahead as our little household matures.
My interest in diaper covers...
I had always planned on diapering with cloth. As a Brooklyn apartment dweller and laundromat user I relied on a diaper service until my son was 5 months old. At that point, I was given a portable washing machine (thanks mom!) and decided to make the leap into washing cloth at home. My good friend Lisa had been washing her own dipes since day one and had loads of advice about everything. But the idea that intrigued me the most was WOOL. I loved the fact that I could put a gorgeous piece of knitted, organic, natural fiber on my son's butt and it would be not only cute but incredibly functional as well. I started researching the benefits of wool (see "why wool") and searching for knitting patterns. Then I came across the idea of the recycled-sweater-turned-cover. Even better! Sweaters get accidentally thrown in the hot water laundry and shrink, then I hunt them down at thrift stores and give them a new life as wooly, cute diaper covers, pants and leg warmers...all the benefits of wool with the added bonus of reducing consumption of new resources. Thus *begins* my journey into cloth and wool diapering. I hope you will join me!
